Seven-year-old kids are fun, have a lot of energy, and love to play, but it can be hard to know what kids at that age like to play with. I did a little digging with the 7-year-olds I know and looked online, and this is what I found.
What do 7 year-olds like to play with? The answer is a lot of things, so I come up with the top 5:
- NERF Toys
- LEGOS
- Nintendo Switch
- Sports balls
- Spin Krazy
7-year-old kids can be hard to shop for, especially when it comes to toys. All they seem to want is a puppy or a bunny and both seem like a little bit too much.
Plus, they are just outgrowing the little kid toys and are a little too young for the big kid toys. Don’t worry though, there are some perfect toys out there for 7-year-old kids.
Top 10 Toys for 7-Year-Old Kids
So, what is the magic secret to finding the perfect gift for a 7-year-old? From my research, I have found that getting things that are fun, interactive, and things that take energy are the things that make 7-year-olds the happiest.
I did research on the best toys and what they have to offer and I found a great list for 7-year-old boys and girls. Don’t worry I left puppies off. There are some really great toys out there!
Some of the toys I hadn’t really heard of but they have great reviews while most of them were either toys that my 7-year-old nieces and nephews like to play with or ones that I wish I could play with.
NERF Toys
One of the great gifts ever invented are NERF toys. Not only are they soft and difficult to break, but they come in lots of different shapes and sizes that add into the fun!
There are a lot of different types of NERF toys out there and they all are fun and are all safe. I listed my 7-year-old nieces and nephews favorites and added a few of my own. It’s always fun to play with the kids sometimes.
- Nerf Vortex Aero Howler Foam Battle Toy this foam football is awesome and tons of fun! It is great for 7-year-olds who want to go and play catch with one another because they are less likely to get hurt. It’s really awesome.
- Nerf Nitro Longshot Smash okay I have a nephew that loves cars and this thing is totally awesome. It launches these foam cars over this ramp and it’s so cool. Plus it comes with 4 obstacles which my 7-year-old nephew would love.
- Nerf Zombie Strike Wrathbolt this little bow and arrow kit is perfect for the outdoors. It teaches kids skill and precision and because the arrows are Nerf it is completely harmless.
- Nerf Sports Dude Perfect PerfectShot Hoops man I remember when my brother was about 7 and he had one of these hanging on his wall from then until about 14. This little basketball hoop and ball are awesome and the perfect toy.
- Nerf Rival Nemesis MXVII-10K this blaster is awesome, safe, and fun for the whole family. The reviews on this NERF product are great and people really seem to love it. I’m thinking about buying it and ambushing my husband.
Basically, NERF is awesome and it seriously is a ton of fun for not only 7-year-olds but also for the whole family. It’s nice to find a toy and
LEGOS
When I was a kid, LEGOS were all blocks and you were super cool when you made them into a house or something. Nowadays, LEGOS come in kits and you can create all sorts of things!
I’ve seen 7-year-olds working on Star Wars battleships, trains, and even the Harry Potter castle! How cool is that? At first, I was unsure if I liked this new design for LEGOS, but after a while, I learned to love them.
Not only do they give 7-year-old kids a goal, but they also help them refine their kinetic skills and they still leave room for imagination as children play with them.
There are some awesome different LEGOS hat can be built and put together. If you had a couple of years I’d list them all, so instead, I listed just a few of my favorites.
- LEGO Harry Potter Hogwarts Great Hall this is my favorite because I love Harry Potter and it is just awesome. Plus if you are reading the books out loud to your 7-year-old it makes for a great learning piece.
- LEGO Classic Creative Builder Box this is my second favorite because its what I grew up playing with and it is perfect for 7-year-olds. It is fun and obviously, it must be a fun gift if kids like to play with it still.
- LEGO Ideas Ship in a Bottle I’m not going to lie this Legos ship in a bottle is super cool! It is creative and also a little bit difficult so that it can help challenge kids. I love this LEGO.
LEGOS are such great toys for kids and they are a great thing to have at the house for those times when the weather is bad and the kids need to stay inside.
Seven-year-old kids love them, I love them, and families can love them. LEGOS are a great gift for any family.
Nintendo Switch
When I was a 7-year-old kid we played on the Nintendo 64 and the Super Nintendo. Now we weren’t allowed to play all of the time, but it was epic and awesome being able to play with my siblings.
Now they have progressed and 7-year-olds are playing with Nintendo Switches. I haven’t ever played on one but my husband and his brother have and they LOVE it.
Not to mention my 7-year-old nephew that thinks it’s the bee’s knees. So this new version of the Nintendo is hitting it off great! I did some research about it and it is super cool!
With great games like Super Mario, Pokemon, and Just Dance this console has a little bit for everyone. I have no questions as to why 7-year-olds love this gaming console.
A large number of critics and gamers initially laughed off the Nintendo Switch in the months between its announcement and release. However, it ended up being a smash success for Nintendo, selling out within a day. By the end of the fiscal year, the Switch had become the fastest-selling game console of all time, beating out even the PS2’s year one sales.

Everyone loves it especially 7-year-old kids, and even though it was destined to fail when it was first released it has easily become a household classic again.
Pokemon Cards
Speaking of Pokemon and my 7-year-old past I was surprised to see my 7-year-old nieces and nephews caring around and playing with Pokemon cards.
I thought Pokemon cards would have faded away with my childhood but they are still in full force out there in the world, and 7-year-old kids love them.
If you don’t know what a Pokemon card does or how you play with it, don’t worry I have no idea either. Well, I didn’t have any idea until I sat down and watch some kids playing.
It is actually a really great game for kids because they have to use math to figure out health points and they have to learn how to be strategic in there playing. I was actually impressed and much more inclined to buy a pack for my nieces and nephews.
If your old school like me and remember the trading days don’t you fret the kiddos are still out there trading cards like we used to. 7-Year-Old kids love Pokemon just as much as we used to.
Sports Balls
This may seem like a super obvious answer but 7-year-old kids really love to play outside and sports balls are a fun way to do that. I know that when all of the 7-year-olds I know get together with their friends they always end up playing with some kind of sports ball.
Some of the classics are basketballs, footballs, soccer balls, volleyballs, baseballs, and so forth. We have seen one or played with one at least once in our lives.
The other day though I was at my nephew’s house and he pulled out a wall ball and asked if I wanted to play. I thought wall balls would have disappeared by now but apparently not.
So, we played wall ball. It was fun and exciting and both of my nephews and my niece joined in. One is around 7 and the other two are a bit older. But this sports ball that I had forgotten all about had become popular again.
If you really want to go crazy you can put a tether ball court in your backyard. Basically, it’s a pole that has a ball attached to it by a long string. I was at a farmstead and there were a ton of kids lined up to play tetherball.
I thought I was going crazy at first but this game has not gone out of style and 7-year-olds still love to play it. I was very impressed and very surprised, but it was awesome to watch kids playing tether-ball again.
Spin Krazy
When I first saw my 7-year-old nieces and nephews playing a Spin Krazy I was so confused. I had no idea what it was, how it worked, or what you did with it.
As I watched them play though I learned and found out that it is actually a really fun gift for a 7-year-old kid/
Kids love it though, and it seems to be the new scooter for this younger generation.
A Spin Krazy looks almost like on of those bikes that you can get where you’re sitting almost level with the ground except that it doesn’t have pedals and it a little crazy.
This little bike like thing can drive around and it spins. It is rather entertaining to watch as an adult although it doesn’t look that inviting seeing as it is made for 7-year-olds.
Don’t worry though the kids love it and always want a turn playing on it. If you don’t really know what it is don’t worry I didn’t as well before my nieces and nephews introduced me.

Halloween Costumes
So it sounds weird to have Halloween costumes on this list but I have found that 7-year-olds still like to play dress-up. Whether that is dressing up like pirates, princesses, robbers, unicorns, or whatever cartoon characters are popular at the time.
I recently found some pictures from the summer after I had turned 7 and my brother, cousin, and I had all played dress up in some old-fashioned dress-up clothes. It was a hilarious sight.
Fast forward to 2018, and 7-year-olds still love to play dress up. I have a lot of friends who just keep a chest or bin with a bunch of random dress-up clothes and then let their kids play and have fun.
I personally love to shop online because I can browse and not feel rushed and it is just faster sometimes. So, I love Amazon and I shop there a lot. I did some research on dress up clothes and found some cute bins that come with outfits in them so if your interested click here for the boy’s bin and here for the girl’s bin.
Star Hammock and Climber
These things are awesome. Do you remember those metal cage looking things that were in playgrounds? They had different colored bars and were a bunch of triangles shaped together into a dome? They are called climbing towers or climbing domes.
Well, a star hammock is a hammock that has five points and it fits inside one of those cage climbers. It is really cool. That way kids can play climbing around and then take a break resting on the hammock.
When added to a climbing dome they are a fun way to play in the sun and then relax with your friends. It is a simple backyard toy that is perfect for one 7-year-old or multiple.
Bikes
One of the classic toys for 7-year-olds and yet one that I find myself forgetting. Bikes are a great thing for 7-year-olds to play with. not only and they fun and interactive but they are definitely energy consuming.
I remember getting home from school and doing my homework then going outside with the neighbor kids and riding our bikes until dinner time. Bikes are a great form of exercise and kids really love them.
The best thing about bikes is that you can always find them and always find them in the right size. If you don’t know the right size of bike for your 7-year-old click here and ther is an article that explains it quite simply.
Bit Coding Robot
A bit coding robot is a pocket-sized robot that is supposed to help build early STEAM skills. It comes with its own markers that kids draw commands with and the robot follows.
I have never seen one in person, but having read about them they seem awesome and something that every 7-year-old kid would love. Plus they come with 4 skins so that the kids can change how they look.
Because these robots are on the small size they tend to be a bit fragile so it is suggested that parents help their kids learn how to play with them so that they don’t get accidentally broken.
This is great because it provides a way for parents and kids to play together with something that is incredibly fun but also educational.
The reviews are all great and people really seem to be loving these fun little robots. Small enough to fit in a pocket these little guys are on the rage with 7-year-old kids and their parents.

What are good board games for 7-year-olds? There are a lot of good board games out there but it can be hard to determine which are best for 7-year-olds to be playing with. Some great games to play with your kids are Ticket to ride, Kanoodle, and Speak Out.
